These programs don't pay rent directly, but lowering a utility bill can free up money to stay current on rent.
LIHEAP — cash assistance paid to an eligible utility company.
LIHWAP — help with overdue water bills, when the program is open.
Dollar Energy Fund — utility grants for eligible households.
Duquesne Light Assistance — low-income energy assistance, including a McKeesport-area location.
ACTION-Housing Weatherization — free energy-efficiency work for qualifying renters (landlord approval required), serving Allegheny County and the Mon Valley.
Apply or get screened for these through COMPASS community partners, PA 211, or Allegheny Link.
Call Allegheny Link at 1-866-730-2368. Ask to be screened for eviction prevention, rental assistance, first month's rent, security deposit, or homelessness services.
If an eviction case is already filed (or you have a mediation agreement), call ACTION-Housing at 412-248-0021 or email [email protected].
If no court filing has happened yet, call Just Mediation at 412-228-0730 — your landlord will need to agree to participate.
Call 211 or text your ZIP code to 898-211 for current church, nonprofit, and utility funds specific to your area.
In the McKeesport area, contact The Intersection and the Salvation Army McKeesport office directly.
Apply separately for public housing or vouchers through the McKeesport Housing Authority or Allegheny County Housing Authority — these usually won't resolve an immediate rent shortfall, but are worth having in motion.
Please note: Pennsylvania's Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) is closed. Please don't rely on old ERAP application links you may find online — use the current programs listed above instead.
